মানুষের জীবনে সততা ও লোভের প্রভাব কতটা গভীর হতে পারে, তা সহজ ও শিক্ষণীয়ভাবে তুলে ধরা হয়েছে "সোনার থালা" গল্পে। এই গল্পে দুই ফেরিওয়ালার ভিন্ন চরিত্রের মাধ্যমে দেখানো হয়েছে যে সৎ ও ন্যায়পরায়ণ মানুষ শেষ পর্যন্ত সম্মান ও সাফল্য লাভ করে, আর লোভী ব্যক্তি নিজের লোভের কারণেই ক্ষতির সম্মুখীন হয়। 

একটি পুরোনো ও ময়লাযুক্ত সোনার থালাকে কেন্দ্র করে গড়ে ওঠা এই গল্পটি আমাদের সত্যবাদিতা, ন্যায়বোধ এবং মানবিক মূল্যবোধের গুরুত্ব সম্পর্কে গুরুত্বপূর্ণ শিক্ষা দেয়। শিশু-কিশোর থেকে শুরু করে সব বয়সের পাঠকের জন্য এটি একটি অনুপ্রেরণামূলক ও শিক্ষামূলক গল্প।

অনেক দিন আগের কথা। এক দেশে সেরিবান নামে এক ফেরিওয়ালা থাকতেন। তিনি কখনো লোভ করতেন না। সেখানে সেরিবা নামে আরও একজন ফেরিওয়ালা থাকতেন। সেরিবা ছিলেন খুব লোভী। একবার সেরিবান আর সেরিবা অন্ধপুর নগরে বাণিজ্য করতে গেলেন।

অন্ধপুরে সেই সময়ে এক বণিক পরিবার বাস করত। একসময় ওই বণিক পরিবার খুব ধনী ছিল। তবে ধন-সম্পদ হারিয়ে তারা গরিব হয়ে যায়। সেই পরিবারের কেবল বুড়ি ঠাকুরমা এবং তার এক নাতনি বেঁচে ছিল। তারা প্রতিবেশীর বাড়িতে কাজ করে অতি কষ্টে সংসার চালাতেন।

তাদের ছিল একটি সোনার থালা। বণিক যখন বেঁচে ছিলেন, সেই থালায় ভাত খেতেন। এখন আর সেই থালা কেউ ব্যবহার করে না। ধীরে ধীরে থালাটায় ময়লা জমতে শুরু করে। দেখেও বোঝা যাচ্ছিল না থালাটা সোনা দিয়ে তৈরি। ভাঙা থালা-বাটির সাথে সেটিকে রেখে দেওয়া হয়েছিল। বুড়ি ঠাকুরমাও থালাটির কথা ভুলে গিয়েছিলেন।

একদিন লোভী সেরিবা সেই বাড়ির পাশ দিয়ে যাচ্ছিলেন। যেতে যেতে সুর করে বলছিলেন-'জিনিস কিনি, জিনিস। কেউ কি পুরানো জিনিস বেচবেন?'

ফেরিওয়ালার ডাক শুনে নাতনি ঘর থেকে বেরিয়ে এলো। ফেরিওয়ালাকে বলল, 'তুমি কি পুরানো থালা কিনবে?'

'থালাটা দেখাও তো!' সেরিবা বললেন।

নাতনি সোনার থালাটি বের করে আনল। তারপর ঠাকুরমাকে বলল, 'ও ঠাকুরমা, এটা তো কোনো কাজে আসে না। এটা বিক্রি করে দিই?'

ঠাকুরমা বললেন, 'এটা বিক্রি করে কী করবে?'

নাতনির ছিল গয়না কেনার শখ। সে বলল, 'আমাকে গয়না কিনে দিয়ো।'

ঠাকুরমাও দেখলেন থালাটি কোনো কাজে আসে না। তাই তিনি বিক্রি করতে রাজি হলেন। ফেরিওয়ালাকে বললেন, 'এই থালার বদলে আমাদের কত টাকা দিতে পারবেন?'

সেরিবা থালাটা উলটে-পালটে দেখলেন। তাঁর মনে হলো এটি সোনার। তাই তিনি সুঁই দিয়ে থালার পিছনে দাগ দিলেন। নিশ্চিত হলেন থালাটি আসলেই সোনার। তিনি ভাবলেন, তাদের ঠকিয়ে এটি নিতে হবে। তাই বললেন, 'এর আবার দাম কী! এক টাকায় নিলেও ঠকা হয়।' এ রকম বলে তিনি থালাটা রেখে চলে গেলেন।

একটু পরেই সেই বাড়ির পাশ দিয়ে সেরিবান যাচ্ছিলেন। তিনিও হেঁকে বলছিলেন- 'জিনিস কিনি, জিনিস। কেউ কি পুরানো জিনিস বেচবেন?'

আরেক ফেরিওয়ালার ডাক শুনে নাতনি আবার ছুটে এলো। ঠাকুরমাকে বলল, 'ঠাকুরমা, ডাক দাও না এই ফেরিওয়ালাকে!'

ঠাকুরমা বললেন, 'নিজের কানেই তো শুনেছ। থালাটির কোনো দাম নেই। ঘরে বেচার মতো আর কোনো জিনিস নেই।'

নাতনি বলল, 'সেই ফেরিওয়ালা ভালো না। ওর কথা শুনে গায়ে জ্বালা ধরে যায়। এই ফেরিওয়ালার ডাক কত মিষ্টি। ইনি বোধ হয় থালাটা নিতে রাজি হবেন। একবার দেখি না!'

ঠাকুরমা সেরিবানকে ডাকলেন। তারপর থালাটা তাঁর হাতে দিলেন। সেরিবান দেখেই বুঝলেন থালাটা সোনার। তিনি বললেন, 'মা, এই থালার দাম লক্ষ টাকা। আমার কাছে তো এত টাকা নেই।'

ঠাকুরমা বললেন, 'একটু আগে এক ফেরিওয়ালা এসেছিলেন। তিনি বললেন এর দাম এক টাকাও না। বোধ হয় আপনার পুণ্যের কারণে থালাটা সোনার হয়ে গেছে। আমরা এটা আপনাকেই দেব। তার বদলে আপনি যা ইচ্ছা দিন।'

সেরিবান তাদের এক হাজার টাকা দিলেন। তারপর সোনার থালাটা নিয়ে চলে গেলেন।

খানিক বাদে লোভী সেরিবা আবার বণিকের বাড়িতে এলেন। তিনি বললেন, 'থালাটা দাও তো। যেতে যেতে ভাবলাম, কিছু টাকা দিয়ে এটা নিয়ে যাই। সেজন্য আবার এলাম।'

ঠাকুরমা বললেন, 'সে কী কথা! আপনি তো বললেন ওটার দাম এক টাকাও হবে না। এইমাত্র একজন ফেরিওয়ালা এসে সেটি নিয়ে গেছেন। থালার বদলে এক হাজার টাকা দিয়ে গেছেন।'

ঠাকুরমার কথা শুনে লোভী সেরিবার মাথা ঘুরে গেল। তিনি তখন পাগলের মতো লাফালাফি শুরু করলেন। জিনিসপত্র সব ছুড়ে ফেলে হায় হায় করতে লাগলেন।

"সোনার থালা" গল্পটি আমাদের শেখায় যে সততা, ন্যায়পরায়ণতা ও ভালো চরিত্র মানুষের সবচেয়ে বড় সম্পদ। লোভ মানুষকে অন্ধ করে দেয় এবং শেষ পর্যন্ত ক্ষতির কারণ হয়। অন্যদিকে, সৎ মানুষ সবসময় সম্মান ও সফলতা লাভ করে। সেরিবান সত্য কথা বলে ন্যায্য মূল্য দিয়েছিলেন, তাই তিনি লাভবান হন। আর সেরিবা লোভ করে প্রতারণার চেষ্টা করায় শেষ পর্যন্ত বড় ক্ষতির মুখে পড়েন।

শিক্ষা (Moral of the Story):

"লোভে পাপ, পাপে সর্বনাশ। সততাই সর্বোত্তম নীতি।"

Long ago, in a certain country, there lived a peddler named Seriban. He was an honest man and never acted greedily. There was another peddler named Seriba, who was very greedy. One day, both Seriban and Seriba traveled to the city of Andhapura for trade.

At that time, a merchant's family lived in Andhapura. The family had once been very wealthy, but they lost all their riches and became poor. Only an old grandmother and her granddaughter remained alive. They earned their living by working in their neighbors' homes.

The family owned a golden plate. When the merchant was alive, he used to eat from it. After his death, nobody used the plate anymore. Over time, it became covered with dirt and dust, making it impossible to recognize that it was made of gold. It was kept among broken household utensils, and even the grandmother had forgotten about its value.

One day, the greedy Seriba passed by their house, calling out, "Old goods! I buy old goods! Does anyone have anything to sell?"

Hearing his call, the granddaughter came outside and asked, "Will you buy an old plate?"

"Let me see it," Seriba replied.

The girl brought out the golden plate and asked her grandmother, "Grandmother, this plate is of no use to us. Shall we sell it?"

"What will you do with the money?" asked the grandmother.

The girl loved jewelry and said, "Please buy me some ornaments."

The grandmother agreed. She handed the plate to Seriba and asked, "How much will you give us for this?"

Seriba examined the plate carefully. He suspected it was made of gold. To be sure, he scratched the back with a needle and confirmed that it was genuine gold. Then he thought of cheating them.

"This plate is worthless," he said. "I would be losing money even if I paid one coin for it."

Leaving the plate behind, he walked away.

A little later, Seriban came along the same road, calling out, "Old goods! I buy old goods!"

The granddaughter again came outside and requested her grandmother to call him.

The grandmother said, "The previous peddler told us the plate had no value."

"But this man sounds kind and honest," the girl replied. "Let's show it to him."

They called Seriban and gave him the plate. As soon as he saw it, he realized it was made of gold.

"Mother," he said respectfully, "this plate is worth a fortune. I do not have enough money to pay its full value."

The grandmother replied, "The other peddler said it was not even worth one coin. Perhaps because of your honesty, it has become gold. We will give it to you. Just pay whatever you can."

Seriban gave them one thousand coins, which was all he had, and took the golden plate.

Some time later, Seriba returned to the house.

"Give me the plate," he said. "I have changed my mind and decided to buy it."

The grandmother replied, "You said it was worthless. Another peddler came and bought it. He gave us one thousand coins for it."

Hearing this, Seriba was shocked. He realized that his greed had cost him a great fortune. In anger and frustration, he threw down his belongings and cried out in despair.

Greed often leads to loss, while honesty brings respect and success. A truthful and fair person ultimately gains what a greedy person loses.

Moral: Honesty is the best policy, and greed leads to destruction.
